Mac Woodworks

1 Jul

I really love to cook, but my kitchen tools have not grown since my shotgun apartment with kitchenette days. So even though I don’t use my new fancy oven for storage, I am lacking in the tools to prepare  food to be cooked. It’s embarrassing that behind my newly refinished cabinet are a mismatched set of silverware, two knives and one bowl. It has taken me three years and a lot of burns to remember to buy pot holders. As my family ventures into the  world of  no wheat,  gluten, sugar(for his Crohn’s) or meat (I’m vegetarian) cooking I am really obsessed with all things kitchen.

I love these wooden bowls. They add such a nice contrast and texture to table setting. These are made by Mac Woodworks from local trees in the Mid South. They are beautiful, light weight and environmentally friendly. He uses trees that were destined for a landfill or burn pile and he even recycles his wood chips!

Recycled Banner to Desk Organizer

24 Jun

We had these large banner signs printed up for our Earth Day event to bring people into our shopping center. I hated to just throw them away, especially with EARTH DAY printed on them. I used them to cover these plain plastic desk organizers. See my steps!

Upcyled Sneaker Shop

25 May

I love everything about taking something old and using it in a new way. This is a very creative use of materials by Pinkeye from a closing school to design the interior the a sneaker store, Shoe Supply. The concept makes for a space you really want to be in. I like the black industrial lights. It really plays the modern against the retro. Retro being the memories if you have been out of school a while! Remember when everyone didn’t have a cell phone, and you actually had to write someone and note! Read the interview with the designer on Dwell.

Recycled Florals

Recycled Florals

After seeing the setting for Ruche’s clothing line I was inspired to try it myself. Instead of butcher block paper I used other paper materials that we had a surplus of around the office to make flowers to decorate our Earth Day event signs . I enjoy being about to re purpose something and I also love the way type makes and interesting texture.

Green Signs

We planned a big earth day celebration this year at Colony Crossing with live music, great food and activities.  I wanted to make a signage system to help people navigate through our event. In keeping with our green theme I made signs from recycled materials that I could use again the next year.

I am a huge fan of designer Don Carney’s ink drawings. I cannot purchase on of these drawings, but I can enjoy these designs everyday thanks to West Elm. Patch NYC designed a great collection of framed artwork, pillows, and and plates decorated with reproductions of don’s original drawings of flowers, plants, birds, and bugs West Elm summer 2010 collection.

Scrap Lights by Graypants

Scrap Lights by Graypants

I love items made from recycled goods. Not only is this a good thing for the environment, but it seems to make the product more interesting. These lights are made from salvaged pieces of corrugated cardboard by Graypants. You can see that these guys have an architecture background, in the detail of the form. The bonus of this design, is the interesting shapes the light and shadow play leave on the wall.
