Tribal Inspired Designs

6 Dec

I am really proud of my Indian Heritage. I have great memories of going to the Indian Reservation with my Grandmother, Pearl. I love geometric shapes, so I am also inspired by Native American art. These are some tribal-ish prints I have been working on. I am not sure exactly where I am going with it yet, but I like it. Mini prints? Tea towels? Maybe Santa will bring me a gift card to Spoonflower!?

Mississippi T-shirts

Mississippi T-shirts

One thing I dreaded when I moved to Mississippi, (that’s right, I am coming out!) was dealing with all of the Stereotypes that go along with it. In preparing to go to the HOW design conference I decided to beat them to the punch, by making these shirts to wear.  In case anyone needs it, I would like to clear up a few things.

1. I am not married to my cousin. Not even a second, third or fourth.

2. I am not running around barefoot. In fact I have lots of shoes!!!

3. Just because it is hard to move fast when it is 115 degrees outside, doesn’t mean I am lazy.

4. I am well educated and love to read.. really, we do read.

5. Just because I can’t ride the subway to work, don’t dock my cool points. Give me a chance to show you what a nerd I am!

Desert Art

Desert Art

The scale and contrast between the black and white images and their desert background is compelling. The transfer of a simple collage technique to something so powerful is magnificent! Chip Thomas has worked as a physician on the Navajo nation since 1987, and over the years he has photographed people in his community. In 2009 he began wheatpasting large photocopies of his images in Navajo lands and beyond. He documents this work on his blog.
