Cheap, Easy, DIY Christmas Decorations: Part One

20 Dec

Every year I vow that when all of the Holiday decorations go on sale I will stock up for the next year, but I never do. I saw a stack of white felt rectangles at the fabric store, for twenty cents a piece, the word snowflake popped into my head, and I bought them on a whim. Two dollars and three hours later I had two garlands and a wreath! Cheap and easy, just like I like it!

Paper Wreath

8 Dec

I saw this post last year and coveted this wreath. It combines three things I love: books, paper, and type. I was posted today on Ready Made. See Lindsay’s blog for the tutorial. Let me know how it goes if you try it out!

Mississippi T-shirts

14 Jun

One thing I dreaded when I moved to Mississippi, (that’s right, I am coming out!) was dealing with all of the Stereotypes that go along with it. In preparing to go to the HOW design conference I decided to beat them to the punch, by making these shirts to wear.  In case anyone needs it, I would like to clear up a few things.

1. I am not married to my cousin. Not even a second, third or fourth.

2. I am not running around barefoot. In fact I have lots of shoes!!!

3. Just because it is hard to move fast when it is 115 degrees outside, doesn’t mean I am lazy.

4. I am well educated and love to read.. really, we do read.

5. Just because I can’t ride the subway to work, don’t dock my cool points. Give me a chance to show you what a nerd I am!

Recycled Florals

14 May

After seeing the setting for Ruche’s clothing line I was inspired to try it myself. Instead of butcher block paper I used other paper materials that we had a surplus of around the office to make flowers to decorate our Earth Day event signs . I enjoy being about to re purpose something and I also love the way type makes and interesting texture.

Green Signs

7 May

We planned a big earth day celebration this year at Colony Crossing with live music, great food and activities.  I wanted to make a signage system to help people navigate through our event. In keeping with our green theme I made signs from recycled materials that I could use again the next year.

1950′s Chair before and After

7 Apr

I  love the  simple lines of furniture from the 1950′s. I really enjoy the process of giving something that has seen better days, a new life. Sometimes paint is the best choice to give vintage furniture a fresh and modern feel. In this case, I sanded and re stained the wood in a darker finish. Then I cleaned and re upholstered the chair.

How to Hem Jeans Like a Pro

2 Apr

Tailoring jeans to give you the perfect fit, without a geeky unmatched hem, is really easy to do yourself. With this method you will not cut of the excess material to adjust the length, but fold it under and sew line of thread just above the regular hem. This is a fake out of sorts, so the new length looks like you bought them this way.
